Introduction to Linux

What is Linux ?It is an operating system. It is an interactive thing between the hardware and software. It allows software to talk with the hardware. In 1991-1994 Linus Torvalds created the Linux OS. People think that Linux is one kind of UNIX. But it is different from UNIX. In 90’s UNIX was a paid and Linux was totally free version. Linus wanted to create a totally free operation system and that is why he created Linux.

Distribution:
Linus wanted to give the OS to the world as a totally free. He gave the code that he created to all. In this way Linux became different in China, Brazil or in any other country as per their style. Thus different types of Linux came. In that way Red Hat, Ubuntu, Android etc came to the market. All these are different version of Linux and they are called as different distributions. Every distribution has different purpose. Like Ubuntu is suitable for personal use and Red Hat is suitable for enterprise level uses. Every distribution has their on support service. Like when we use the Red Hat we can’t think of getting support from Ubuntu.

Open source:
Linux is open source or free. The programmer will give you the source code. You are allowed to see the source code. But it never does mean that open source software is free. We can use some of the distributions of Linux totally free and even some of enterprise level distributions also. Yes enterprise level OS can be used totally free !!!! But we have to pay money if we need support from the vendor. Thus they can get money by giving support. For example we can say about the Red Hat. So open source doesn’t imply that it is free.

Even there are Linux OS that need to be paid 250 $ per year to continue the server service. Whereas the windows server 2008 is only 600 $ for a single payment.  For long year view windows is cheaper. So Linus is not cheaper!!!

Shell:
Shell is the screen to interact with the operating system. If we use Windows, then we use a mouse to click. When we double click a folder it becomes open. This is the way to interact with the operating system. This is called GUI (Graphical User Interface) shell.

In Linux we use LUI (Line User Interface) shell. LUI is more powerful than GUI. So, We need shell to operate or interact with the operating system.

Most of the engineering students of our country have lacks of having idea about present trends of technology concerning professions. I hope you shall alwaus continue this kind of writings and help to enrich a generation. :)
